COOPER COLE is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Adrianne Rubenstein. This marks the artists first solo exhibition with the gallery.
The Forest Floor features familiar and playful scenes reminiscent of an iconography that engages our emotional memory. Referring to childhood, but also to a mushroom, a moth, and even a snail, Adrianne Rubenstein creates her own mythology exploring phantasmagorical subjects. The five new oil paintings are typical of the artist’s expressive style characterized by heightened color and direct approach to form. Although she has an interest in expressing emotion through acid-toned color that is often non-naturalistic, nature itself is at the core of her practice, calling for simplicity and unfettered consciousness.
Adrianne Rubenstein (b. 1983, Montreal, Canada) received a BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in 2006 and an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2011. Her work has been featured in solo presentations at The Pit, Los Angeles; Reyes Projects, Birmingham, MI; Fourteen30 Contemporary, Portland, OR; and White Columns, New York. Group exhibitions include Cooper Cole, Toronto; L’inconnue, Montreal; Field Contemporary, Vancouver; Venus Over Manhattan, New York; Tif Sigfrids, Los Angeles and Athens, GA; Galeria Alegria, Madrid; and Galerie Bernard Ceysson, Luxembourg.
Rubenstein is the Director at artist driven gallery CANADA, in New York. She is also an avid curator and has organized exhibitions for Stems Gallery, Brussels; Venus, Los Angeles; 68projects, Berlin; and most recently for Night Gallery, Los Angeles, in collaboration with artist Edgar Bryan. Her work has been covered in The New York Times, Art Forum, W Magazine and Harper’s Bazaar. Adrianne Rubenstein currently lives and works in New York, NY, USA.
